Ask the new flooring installer first
New carpet, hardwood, vinyl, and tile do not all need the same starting surface. Before the old carpet comes out, ask your installer whether tack strips, staples, glue, or another floor layer must also be removed.
Leave room for surprises
Carpet can hide loose wood, cracks, old glue, moisture marks, height changes, or patchwork. Avoid scheduling the new floor so tightly that there is no time to look at what the carpet was covering.
- Confirm whether tack strips should stay or go
- Ask how much old glue can remain
- Leave time to inspect the floor
- Decide who handles any repairs
Take photos after removal
Photos of the bare floor give the owner and flooring installer something useful to discuss. The installer may still need to see the property before saying it is ready.
